Meina and her family in Indonesia

A daughter leads her mother to faith

"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." Romans 6:4

Sintya and her mother, Meina live in Singkawang, a city located on the island of Borneo, Indonesia. A mother to four, Meina used to struggle to provide for her children as her husband’s work wasn’t permanent. Three years ago, their financial worries were eased when Sintya was registered at a local church-based Compassion project.

Each day, Meina would accompany her daughter to the project where she would stay until the activities were over. While she waited, she would hear the children singing and praying. Having been brought up as a Buddhist, Meina felt unsure as she listened in. “I saw how the tutor taught the children to pray, what words to say in a prayer. I was awkward at that time because I didn’t know what to say in a prayer like my daughter learnt at the project,” she remembers.

But slowly, as the months past, Meina began to desire to be able to read the Bible, pray and sing the praises of God, as her daughter did.

In the beginning of 2015, Sintya and Meina attended church together for the first time. “Singing, reading the Bible and praying together with people in the church, I felt something in my heart,” recalls Meina. After the service, she went forward for prayer. “While the pastor prayed my heart was full of joy and trembling; I felt like God was speaking to me [saying] that He loves me and my family. I was crying at that moment.”

Since Meina accepted Christ into her life, she now spends time each day reading the Bible with Sintya and her other children. Together they are learning to walk humbly with God, to follow His commands, to listen to His leading and to serve others.

Heavenly father, today we pray for the families of Compassion-supported children. May they, like Meina, come to know you through their children, the church and Compassion projects. Amen.
