Sponsored child Adele from Honduras

The beginning of a brand new mercy

"Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16

As a parent, receiving the news your child needs major surgery is something you never want to hear. Imagine then, the fear of knowing you can’t pay for the procedure.

The day Adela was born, her father Oscar experienced that fear. Hours after her birth doctors told him she had a rare, life-threatening brain condition. Without surgery she wouldn’t survive. Oscar worked as a day labourer and barely made enough to meet the family’s daily needs, let alone cover the medical costs. In that moment he cried out to God.

God answered Oscar and the doctors agreed to perform the surgery for free. “I was aware that Adela was a gift from God, regardless of her medical condition. I loved my daughter since she was in her mother’s womb. I remember like it was yesterday how God intervened in my desperation and answered my prayers,” says Oscar. After the surgery, Adela developed water on the brain, but again the doctors agreed to intervene for free. “While she was still a baby, doctors [were] determined that Adela would grow up with health problems, unable to move her body or coordinate her own ideas. Defying the odds, God healed Adela, and from that moment forward she no longer faced surgeries. God had already a plan for her.”

At the age of 9, Adela was registered in a Compassion project, in the northern part of Honduras. At the project, Adela flourished and her testimony became a source of encouragement to others. “Every time Adela comes to the project, she cheers everyone up: tutors, children, parents and even me. Adela enjoys helping other children and cares about them,” says Norma, the project director.

The hardship that Oscar and Adela faced turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It was the beginning of a brand new mercy.

Father God, thank you that your mercies are new every morning. We pray for families like Adela’s who are facing hardships, may they know your unfailing love and mercy. Amen.
